Wearing cutoff jeans, which one observer termed OverArmour, Ed blew away the field in 17:49 and won the race for the fourth time. "I almost didn't run (the race)," he laughed, acknowledging that his cutoffs were not his usual running apparel.
St. Clairsville's, Mitch Tranovich, took second place honors in 18:48, while Lew McGrath placed third in 19:00.
Heather Wayt, wearing more traditional running attire, easily won the female race and finished ninth overall with a time of 19:35. Diane Basich (22:14) out-legged Holly Fillipovich (22:49) for second place in the race, which benefits the programming of the Ohio County Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Wheeling's Tony Purpura repeated as male walk champion by taking nearly a minute off his time in 28:33. As last year, Jerry Goodwin (31:33) and David Workman (32:20) placed second and third respectively.

Among the more than 180 entrants of the race, which was presented by the Ohio Valley Runners' & Walkers' Club, were members of the Wheeling Central Catholic High School's boys' basketball team.
Editors Note: This was also the 9th year for iPlayOutside to be at Auggie's. We're proud to say that we've been there every year since it's inception, and of course, we look forward to coming next year for the decade anniversary.

Tom also hosts the Webark Estates 5K Run and Walk every April, benefitting Webark Estates, Inc., a local, non-profit, "no-kill" animal shelter located in Marshall County, Moundsville, WV.

Saturday October 20 marked the ninth year for the Auggie's 5k run and walk in Wheeling, WV. Being an owner of three cats and two dogs, this event holds a special place in my heart being that it benefits the Ohio County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Since animals can't speak up for themselves, it sure is nice to see organizations like this one supporting them. The fact that there is a 5k race to help benefit it is even better!
When I showed up on the site for the event it was hard to believe that it was the third week in October. The sky was filled with sun light and the temperature was nice and warm for this time of year. With the delightful weather over 175 folks showed up to take part in the event and show their support to our four legged friends.
What makes the start so interesting at this event is that the course is on Wheeling's Heritage Trail along the Ohio River. The walkers head out one way and the runners head the other way. It's really a perfect set-up with no one running into each other, yet they all finish in the same place.

On the women's side of the 5k run Heather Wayt of Wheeling took control over the her field to take the win in 19:35.
Diane Basich took second overall finishing in 22:14 with Holly Fillipovich taking third in 22:49. Fourth went to Bethany Schunn crossing the line in 22:58 and Shawna Zervos rounded out the top five finishing in 24:46.
Unlike many other 5k events, the number of walkers that stook part just about equaled the number of runners. Tony Purpura took the men's walking 5k victory, finishing in 28:33. For the women Sherri Alig was first across the line in the walk finishing in 34:03.
