The Smoot Mile
[Coverage/Recap w/Pics] [Results]
Thank you for taking part in the 2nd Annual Smoot Mile. In 1989 the Smoot Theatre was saved from the wrecking ball. This Vaudevillian theatre was built in 1926 and was a showpiece for its time -- one of nine theatres in downtown Parkersburg in the late 20's and early 30's. Today the Smoot is the only historic theatre remaining in Parkersburg. This race, through your participation and entry fees, will enrich current children's programming in the Smoot Theatre. The kids thank you and all "friends of Smoot" thank you!

SMOOT THEATRE HISTORY: The Smoot Theatre is a survivor. Presiding over Fifth Street in downtown Parkersburg, West Virginia, she has adapted determinedly to the changing fashions in entertainment, from her birth in 1926 as a lavish vaudeville theatre, to silent movies, the early "talkies" and modern cinema.
Coming perilously close to demolition in 1989, the proud lady reacted by staging her finest and hopefully final metamorphosis. Aided by a small but committed troop of supporters and volunteers, she once again took on the elegant mantle of the live stage.
Today the refurbished Smoot Theatre is a bustling center for live entertainment, hosting an annual arts series, numerous independent productions, community events, a children's series, and, of course, group tours.
People passing through the impressive mahogany and brass front doors hear about the famous personalities who have graced the Smoot's stage (Wynton Marsalis, Peter Nero, Shirley Jones and all of the big bands to name just a few), fascinating details of the Smoot's structure (the don't build them like that anymore!), and stories of the effort to save and operate the Smoot solely on voluntary endeavors.
